Arudha Lagna

today, I came to know about this another term in Vedic Astrology, 'Arudha Lagna'. I don't get much of it but let me share with you, whatever I understood.
First of all 'Arudha' is a Sanskrit word which mean 'Half'. Before going further to its importance and meaning, let's us know how to calculate Arudha Lagna in our birth chart.

Step 3.1 – Don’t use nodes as co-lord of Aquarius (Rahu) and Scorpio (Ketu) use only their regular lords Saturn for Aquarius and Mars for Scorpio to find Arudha Lagna with a rule in mind that if the lord of the sign is in own sign then the same sign becomes Arudha Lagna.

  1. After dealing Arudha lagna and Karakamsha Lagna now the Sage deals with Up-pada which in fact nothing but Arudha of 12th house. Since Up-pada deals with various aspects relating to spouse, health of spouse and the longevity of marriage hence the Sage considers it as important as the Arudha lagna and the Karakamsha lagna are.
  2. First calculate the lagna arudha, Venus or shukra is 10 th sign from the sixth house. And 10 th from cancer or karkat rashi is Aries or mesha rashi that is the 12 th house. The sixth house from this is ruled by Virgo or kanya.This has no malefic aspect and mercury or budha sits in fourth house or Kendra.

Here are the steps to calculate Arudha Lagna:

  1. Look at what house your ascendant lord (Lagna Lord) is placed and count the number of houses apart it is situated from your first house(Lagna). Counting is to be done along the placement of the zodiac signs in their correct order.
  2. Now go the same number of places forward from the house where your Lagna lord is placed and that is your Arudh Lagna. (This is the information that I got from Kapiel Raaj of KRSchannel).
LagnaExample: Let's suppose your Ascendant sign is Libra. So Libra becomes the 1st house. Now if Venus(Ascendant lord) is situated in Sagittarius i.e. 3rd house.

So Venus is 3 houses apart from your Ascendant sign. Now putting your finger at Sagittarius and counting 1, take two steps further, you will reach at Aquarius in the third count. So Aquarius becomes your Arudha Lagna. And Saturn is your Arudha Lagna Lord.
Exceptions: I read two other articles on internet and according to them Rishi Parashar gave exception to the above rules. Here is this:
If your Lagna Lord is situated at 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses of your birth chart, then you will deduct 4 houses from the final count. Means you have to less for counts in the second step above mentioned.
Example: Let's say your Ascendant lord of Libra Sign is placed in the seventh house of Aries. You will not count 7 houses further from Aries but, you will count only 7-4 = 3 houses further. So, Aries, Taurus and Gemini (9th house) becomes your Arudha Lagna.
What does Arudha Lagna Signify? Well, Arudha Lagna is not your true personality but this is the personality which people think of you. This is how you appear in the Maya world, in materialistic world of money and power.

This gives a 9 degree Virgo lagna with the Moon at 18 deg 47 min Capricorn using Lahiri Ayanamsha.

The lagna lord Mercury goes into the 3rd house Scorpio, and therefore the Arudha lagna is three houses from there, counting inclusively….which gives Capricorn as the Arudha lagna.

Aside from having the 10th lord in the 3rd house of performance, one would be hard-pressed to see her spectacular song and dance career just from the normal perspective of the birth lagna.

But early on in my study of Jyotish I was admonished by Shri K.N. Rao to see the career life from the Arudha lagna. From here it could hardly be more obvious.

A vargottama Venus, the planet of music, is with the Moon in the Arudha lagna Capricorn and rules the 10th house Libra from there. Note that this is also the pattern from Chandra lagna. In addition, Jupiter, the 3rd lord of the performing arts, is in the 10th house in Venus’s sign.

Using Chara dasha, her spectacular stardom at such a young age has all come in the period of Scorpio.

Examine the planetary patterning using Scorpio as a lagna and you find:

1. A powerful 1-10 exchange between the 1st lord Mars and the 10th lord Sun.

2. Both Scorpio (the dasha period) and the 10th from there (Leo) receive the Jaimini sign aspect of the Venus-Moon conjunction which is a special Jaimini raja yoga.

3. The dasha lord Scorpio contains the PK Mercury and the 10th house from there (Leo) contains the AK Mars. Both of these receive Jaimini sign aspect from the DK Venus, forming two more Jaimini raja yogas.

One final observation…..the Chapter on Raja Yoga in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra by sage Parashara gives the following combination:

“If the Moon and a benefic are in the Arudha lagna, as Jupiter is in the 2nd from natal ascendant and both the places are aspected by planets in exaltation or own sign (i.e. are in strength) there will be a Raja Yoga.”

Examine Britney’s chart and you will see that this combination applies in total.

1. The Moon is in the Arudha lagna with the natural benefic, Venus, who is not exalted or in own sign, but is “in strength” being vargottama (located in the same sign in the natal chart as well as the navamsha chart).

2. Her Jupiter is in Libra in the 2nd house from the birth lagna. Jupiter gets the Jaimini sign aspect of Mars. Again, Mars is not exalted or in its own sign, but it is also “in strength” since its dignity is that of Great Friend, and more importantly is involved in an exchange with the Sun.

(Note: In my experience, planets involved in an exchange of signs (parivarthana yoga) give results as if they are “own sign.”)
